Castaway Party Origin and Development
Castaway Party came from a conversation of Mario Party nostalgia and wishing we had a party game to play with friends from afar. The few games in this area now are hardcore PVP or turn-based. We wanted to take the fun, battle-your-friends party atmosphere and combine it with a mobile experience.
With such a small team, building a live 4-player mobile game was slightly outside of our expertise. We were one of the first USA-based companies to use the Quantum framework from Exit Games. We were able to build deterministic, live games incredibly quickly. As an early adopter, we helped find some bugs, test new features, and even change Exit Games’ roadmap - handling so many different games in one deterministic session was not originally a planned feature.
Other games in our market are mostly pay-to-win. We’re pushing for cosmetics sales: a gamble we think makes the game more fun. Castaway Party has been multiple years in the making, and we’re finally here to play.
Furthermore, most other competitive games have a limited set of scenes and artwork on mobile. With 18 minigames so far, we constantly have big tasks at hand to hit a polish level that represents our brand.
company story
Founded in 2017, Parallel Plaid, Inc. is an independent games studio headquartered in Salt Lake City, UT. We are obsessed with making high quality, fun, and even (dare we say) incredibly cute games. A team of only 4, we are small but powerful.
During the development of this game, we’ve had a marriage, two new children, and a whole host of adventures together. Though each of us had a different path into Parallel Plaid, this is the first games job for everyone. Learning how to build games together has led us to make mistakes, change plans, and iterate. Most of the game was built remotely during the pandemic, adding to such a small team’s challenge.
We previously launched two smaller titles, Wobbly Words and Paddle Royale, but Castaway Party is our largest and most engaging game yet!
